An Indigenous herb of central and eastern North America, Goldenseal s antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and expectorant properties have been fighting infections and promoting overall well-being on this continent for centuries. A bestselling herb since the 1850 s, it is not traditional in Ayurveda or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), though both note its wide-ranging benefits.
In TCM it addresses the spleen, liver, and lung meridians, moves fluids, relieves body congestion, treats infections, reduces clumps from inflammation, and balances digestion. In Ayurveda it is seen to ease sore eyes and menstrual cycles, relieve inflammation, congestion, and gum disease. Goldenseal can be used as a tincture, douche, or in teas and is often used with Echinacea to boost the Immune system.
Goldenseal is a very potent herb and should not be taken in high dosages for more than two weeks. Switch to Echinacea after that if the problem persists. Give your body a rest for a week or two before resuming high dosages. For colds or flu, the formula C-FU may be a good alternative. Though it does contain Goldenseal, it uses other herbs in concert with it, lowering the necessary dosage of Goldenseal. Goldenseal should not be taken during pregnancy.
