Mullein soothes inflammation and relieves pain. It clears excess mucus form the body and inhibits the absorption of allergens through mucus membranes. It has a calming effect on the nerves and is effective in treating agitated or inflamed conditions of the nervous system which are caused by coughs or spasms due to cramping. Some of its uses include respiratory allergies, bleeding in the bowels and lungs, bronchitis, coughs, croup, diarrhea, dysentery, emphysema, swollen glands, hemorrhage, insomnia, swollen joints, lung problems, bleeding lungs, lymphatic congestion, mucus membranes, nervousness, pain relief, pleurisy, pulmonary diseases, respiratory or sinus problems, sores, tuberculosis, and the oil is used for earaches. It can also be used as a sleep aid and a laxative. Made into a tea it is good as a throat gargle, for toothache and for washing open sores. It also gets rid of warts. Mullein can be applied to the skin for wounds, burns, hemorrhoids, bruises, frostbite, and skin infections (cellulitis). The leaves are used topically to soften and protect the skin.
